Boey is an architect originally from Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Throughout his early years before pursuing architecture, he worked as a part-time kopitiam boy, serving drinks and engaging with the daily life of the local community—an experience that instilled in him a deep appreciation for human interaction and the social dimensions of space.

He holds a Master of Architecture from Tsinghua University, where he studied under Professor Li Xiaodong, an award-winning Chinese master architect. Under his influence, Boey developed a sensitivity to place that transcended form, grounding his work in cultural and contextual depth.

After graduation, Boey began his professional career working on commercial mixed-use developments and complex urban programs. He later joined SUP Atelier founded by Professor Song Yehao, where he served as a project architect responsible for the design and management of public, cultural and tourism buildings. Among these, the two years he spent leading projects in a Hainan village beneath Wuzhishan Mountain left an indelible mark. Living within the setting while steering the project end-to-end—navigating complexities, refining details, and confronting real-world conditions—provided the bedrock that grounded his approach to site-specific intervention.

With ten years project experience spanning diverse climates and contexts—from dense urban centers to suburban settlements and remote rural sites—Boey’s work is deeply informed by his tropical roots and a lasting curiosity about the relationship between space and nature. His design approach explores the contemporary use of natural materials, combining them with research-based strategies that respond to each project’s unique environmental and cultural context.

At the heart of his practice is a commitment to uncovering the spontaneous qualities of place—its textures, rhythms, and inherent character—and reinterpreting them through a contemporary architectural lens.
