NANJING, FUJIAN
Since ancient times, tulou has brought families together through its enclosed spatial form. The tulou office base will redefine the concepts of enclosure and integration within tulou, influencing the office space of the new era. Enclosure refers to both the physical form of enclosure and the act of moving around within it; integration signifies the various forms of integration in the use of space, as well as the harmony between new users and the original inhabitants. This open-ended enclosure and integration breathes new life into Yupian Lou, allowing tradition and nature to inspire creativity.
The introduction of a creative office base primarily aims to bring young people back to the tulou. Through renovation, it adapts to the characteristics of modern mobile internet-based work, transforming into a multifunctional office space.
GONG HE represents the fusion of the 300-year-old historic building with the diverse needs of modern spaces—a blending of the old and the new.

01 | Reform of tulou function and spatial form
The functional layout is reorganized, planned, and structured based on the original square-shaped cloister space of the tulou. Guided by the needs of a diversified office environment, a new spatial form is cultivated.
02 | Integration and continuity of indoor and outdoor spaces
Both open-plan and enclosed office spaces have their respective advantages and uses. The new structure detaches from the old walls to create a semi-outdoor continuous space. The elevated ground floor serves as an open public area, drawing in people and airflow, while the original inner courtyard functions are relocated to the more spacious outdoors, allowing users and residents to share the space and connect with nature.
03 | The relationship between people & nature, new & old materials
The original exterior earthen walls of the tulou will be completely preserved, while the internal wooden structure will be repaired and reused. The new construction introduces a reform in materials, utilizing rammed earth bricks made with modern techniques. These bricks are arranged in alternating horizontal and vertical stacks to soften the visual impact of the new building. Their permeability connects the interior and exterior spaces, bringing people closer to the natural environment while allowing them to experience the integration of new and old architecture. Users can fully immerse themselves within the tulou structure.
